Our Take on Essential Oils. What works for us.

I read online there are a lot of entries on the effectiveness of Essential Oils for children with autism. Today’s entry is my own personal take on essential oils and how it has worked for my child.

So before you read on, I have to include a disclaimer. What I have written for this entry is not intended to treat, cure, or prevent any disease or illness. Please check with your doctors if you are unsure or would like to try the oils.

Personally for us, I would just apply these oils when my child shows signs of unwell or discomfort. And, during mild situations, he can pretty much recover with just the use of these oils but the time frame is longer than if I was to give western medication. However, when he is really unwell, for example fever at 38 and above, I would use these oils concurrently with the medication given by the doctors.

The main oils that I work with plus a spray bottle that I use for Purification and Frankincense.

I was first introduced to Young Living Oils by my mother’s goddaughter who is selling these oils and who has a nephew on the autism spectrum.  I’ll do a write up on the main oils that I am using for my child and under what circumstances and how I would apply and use each of them.

What is Young Living’s Essential Oils?

‘Essential oils have also been used for thousands of years for cosmetic purposes, as well as for their spiritually and emotionally uplifting properties. Young Living has always been at the forefront of bringing this ancient tradition to modern users, introducing millions to a total mind/body wellness they may never have dreamed possible.
Primarily extracted through careful steam distillation but also through cold pressing, the purest essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they were extracted. Any time you hold a bottle of our powerful essential oils, you are holding nature’s pure essence.

How To Use Essential Oils

Any time you hold a bottle of our powerful essential oils, you are holding the pure essence of health-promoting botanicals that can be diffused, inhaled, applied topically, incorporated into massage, or taken internally to:

When, How and Which Oils I Use

When my child has:

Fever

Peppermint

  • Pour two drops of Peppermint on my palm.
  • Rub both palms together.
  • Dab (not rub) on spine of child

Thieves

  • Pour one drop on Thieves on thumb
  • Apply on big toe
  • Rub towards the arch of foot until fully absorb
  • Repeat for next toe

Lavender

  • Pour one drop of Lavender on palm
  • Rub on rest of the foot until absorb

R.C.

  • Pour one to two drops of R.C. onto palm
  • Rub both palms together
  • Press lightly on child’s chest, neck and back
Diffuse Peppermint for 20 minutes prior to sleeping. The ratio I use is 8 drops for each diffuse.

Cough with Stubborn Phlegm

Layering technique for each foot.
R.C., Thieves, Lavender
  • Pour one drop of R.C. onto palm
  • Rub on sole of foot.
  • Repeat for other foot.
  • Repeat the procedure for Thieves and Lavender

If child has no fever, you can give the child (I only started Chinese medication on my child when he turned four.) pure cordycep in powdered form. The amount is 1/10 of a teaspoon mixed with water. If your child thinks it is too bitter, allow them to take half a teaspoon of honey after the cordycep. This works for my child. He will be willing to swallow the Cordycep.

Flu

Peppermint

  • Pour one to two drops of Peppermint onto palm
  • Rub both palms together
  • Press lightly on child’s chest, neck and back

Note: Peppermint can be quite overpowering. Watch out when you are near the child’s neck area as the oil may get into the child’s eyes if you apply too much.

R.C.

  • Pour one to two drops of R.C. on palm
  • Rub on rest of the foot until absorb

Diffuse R.C. for 20 minutes prior to sleeping. The ratio I use is 8 drops for each diffuse.

Difficulty sleeping

Lavender

  • Pour one drop of Lavender on palm
  • Rub on rest of the foot until absorb

or

R.C.

  • Pour one to two drops of R.C. on palm
  • Rub on rest of the foot until absorb

Tummyache

Although many people wrote that we should use Copaiba on the child when they have tummy or indigestion problem, I feel that Copaiba does not work for my child. I would apply R.C. or Peace & Calming on my child instead. (I ran out of Peace & Calming and am still waiting for the stock to arrive.)

  • Pour one to two drops of R.C. on palm
  • Rub onto tummy followed by another one to two drops on the lower spine area, close to the buttocks.

A Really Foul Mood / Can’t Concentrate

Valor / Cedarwood

  • Pour one drop on the thumb
  • Dab onto the Locus Ceruleus area which is at the back of the neck, below the hairline and before the shoulder-spine

The black line indicates the area the oil is to be applied.

Frankincense

  • One spray bottle
  • Pour four to eight drops of Frankincense into the bottle
  • Spray in car area, study area, living room area (any area in which your child is in)

Aching muscles

  • I ran out of Pan Away thus am not able to feature it in the photo. Basically Pan Away works like the Deep Heat or Counter pain cream we can buy from the pharmacy. Sometimes, after our running sessions at the stadium, my child will complain that his legs are painful. Actually I think they are sore but he doesn’t know what is sore. After applying Pan Away on the thighs and lower leg, he would be alright.
  • Do note that Pan Away is quite ‘hot and spicy’ as it contains clove, peppermint, helichrysum and wintergreen. Try it on a small area of your child first.
  • I do not have the V8 diluting oil thus I would rub Vaseline on my hand with one to two drops of Pan Away before applying on my child.

Rainy season / Mosquito season

Purification

  • One spray bottle
  • Pour four to eight drops of Purification into the bottle. Shake and spray.
  • Spray in car area, study area, living room area (any area in which your child is in)
  • Spray onto child’s and your clothes before heading out

Note: I find Purification really useful in keeping the mosquitoes at bay. And what is good is that I am not worried if the ‘solution’ gets onto my child’s toys or clothes as it is perfectly safe

Summer season / Hot season

Peppermint

  • One spray bottle
  • Pour four to eight drops of Peppermint into the bottle
  • Spray in car area, study area, living room area (any area in which your child is in)

I will also diffuse Peppermint around the house. I find that the minty aroma helps to make all of us feel better.

I hope this information helps you to decide whether Essential Oils are suitable for you and your child. Apart from Valor and Cedarwood which are recommended for kids with autism or who have difficulty in concentration, thus I only apply those two for my child. The whole family shares the other essential oils.
